Need help with quote
- Laura K
- 2/21/17
Hi all! I'm hoping someone can help me with a quote from an old TCM b&w movie I saw. I'm fairly certain it was William Powell who spoke the line, but I could be wrong. It was definitely a movie with quick lines....like the Thin Man series, however, it could have been from something different. The line is: "He's so crooked he could hide behind (or under) a spiral staircase." Whoever spoke it was sitting in some public place across a table from another man, to whom he said it. I'm wondering about it because I found out that there's a similar line from a book by English author, P. G. Wodehouse, which was published posthumously, but well after the movie would have been made. Here it is, copied & pasted from Wikiquotes: Sunset at Blandings (1977 (posthumously published))[edit] "Many a man may look respectable, and yet be able to hide at will behind a spiral staircase." I'm wondering if he saw the movie & expounded on it. Although, they didn't mention when he actually wrote the book, either. I did several net searches, to no avail. Oddly, IMDB.com didn't even have any of the Thin Man series movies listed for Powell beyond the first one. I was checking there for the quote. Anyone?

William Powell and Myrna Loy were consummate professionals and among the golden stars of old Hollywood. Everything they did on film was above average. And of course they made their mark in history too. They were intelligent people, wonderful actors, with a lot of class... characteristics that we need to see more of today.

Teen Who Loves the Classics

The Thin Man series are the best movies I have ever seen. After seeing the first movie, I asked for the whole collection on DVD, and have seen each movie a dozen times. William and Myrna are the cutest couple I have ever seen, and it's their witty remarks and nicknames (mommy and Nicki) that keep me watching. There is no new movie with murder that can even compare to this. I love mysteries and comedies, and this is by far the best of both. I am 14 years old, and as surprised as many adults may be to hear this, I own more old movies than recent ones. Unfortunatly, I am the only person at my school who has ever heard of Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn. I am very disappointed in the way movies and television have gone, but I would like every adult to know that there are a few teenagers who know and love old movies. This movie is a classic and I beg everyone to watch it because I promise you will love it.
