When a bandit gang that is secretly headed by saloon owner Belle Blaine robs a stagecoach relay station, the outlaw's stagecoach driver, Belle's boyfriend Curly Wyatt, reluctantly returns to the station after he and bandit Nevada Simmons realize the express box is a fake. The express agent, who is a friend of Curly, is shot during the second attempt, and when Texas Ranger Tex Wyatt investigates, he is mistaken for Curly, who is Tex's twin brother. Tex and his partners, Jim Steele and Panhandle Perkins, are posing as traveling dentists while they investigate the recent rash of stagecoach robberies, but Tex asks for a leave of absence from the Rangers after getting a note from Curly. Tex and Curly meet in the hills, but Curly is shot by Nevada and gang member Hank. Before Curly dies, he tells Tex that Hank murdered the express agent, but insists that he does not know the identity of the gang's leader. Nevada and Hank apprehend Tex and mistake him for Curly, and when he refuses to turn over the stolen money, they take him back to the gang hideout. Panhandle and Jim, meanwhile, find Curly's body and remember that Tex had a twin brother. They are then ordered to bring Tex into Ranger headquarters. At the outlaws' hideout, Tex impersonates Curly and claims that he was only trying to "lay low," but Belle finds him a changed man. When Nevada challenges Tex, Tex tries to take over the gang and beats Nevada and Hank in a fistfight. After Nevada and Belle discover that Tex is an impostor, Tex leads Nevada to the hidden express box, but Nevada later discovers the box is empty. Shortly after Tex learns that Belle is the leader of the bandits, the Rangers attempt to arrest the gang, but Hank starts firing at them. Belle is wounded during the ensuing gunfight and before she dies, she expresses her fondness for Tex. The outlaws are arrested and Tex is reinstated as a Ranger.
