The working title of this film was Heart of the City. According to a Hollywood Reporter news item, background shots were filmed in London. This picture marked the screen debut of Broadway performer Marc Platt. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Score and the song "Anywhere" was nominated for Best Song. Modern sources note that the theater in the film was modeled on London's Windmill Theatre. Rita Hayworth's singing voice was dubbed by Martha Mears, according to modern sources.
