When pompous British Colonel Southey discovers that Captain Aimsley has been assigned to his unit in Germany just after World War II, he attempts to conceal his pre-war employment as a clerk with the Aimsley family's firm. Aimsley's popularity with the men infuriates Southey, and he informs on Aimsley when Aimsley tries to smuggle some black-market goods into England. Court-martialed and dishonorably discharged, Aimsley sails for Tahiti and there finds an idyllic existence with a native girl, Belle Annie. Some years later, Southey, now a tycoon, comes to Tahiti to build a hotel. He and Aimsley get drunk together, and Southey confesses to informing on Aimsley. The two fight, and Aimsley is left unconscious and later nearly strangled by a thug hired by Chong Sing, a Chinese art dealer who covets Belle Annie. Southey is arrested for attempted murder and deported. Aimsley, who has learned the truth, takes revenge by saying nothing to clear Southey and returns to the happy Tahiti life with Belle Annie.
