The 1940 version is available on DVD through Amazon. I can't vouch for the visual or audio quality of the recordings being sold, but this product is available if you're willing to buy it at a premium. It's priced at around $30.00, since there appears to be a limited number of copies. The 1940 film is a good, well-produced version of the story, though not necessarily superior to the Disney production. And both take generous liberties with the original novel, which had no pirates. The primary conflict in the book is the unusual and sometimes hostile environment--the island itself--that the family is attempting to adapt to. There's a reason the novel and the movie versions are so popular. It's a fun, though dramatic story that the entire family can enjoy.

This is one of my all time favorites and I understand that Disney purchased all known copies of this version just before releasing his version by the same name. Dirty Trick. I would purchase a video/DVD in a heart beat.

I remember this seeing this movie when I was about 12 and Ive always wanted to see it again. It seems it was in sepia tone and I remember the theater I saw it in. I guess it's just it's no longer available.
