After Carol Lawrence is evicted from her boardinghouse, she tries for a singing job at Danny Warren's Embassy Club, but is mistaken for a process server and is forcibly ejected. The person behind the many process servers is Danny's father, a prominent businessman who disapproves of his son's nightclub and wants to prevent the club from opening. When Carol applies for a receptionist position at Warren's company, he offers her fifty dollars to serve papers on Danny, and angered by her earlier treatment at the club, Carol agrees. When she finally meets Danny, however, Carol inadvertently hands him her eviction notice. Danny feels sorry for Carol and, after hearing her sing, not only offers her a job, but a place to stay. On opening night, Danny tells Carol that he has fallen in love with her. Carol returns his feelings and surreptitiously tears up Warren's summons. Later, Marie Finch, a wealthy family friend with a crush on Danny's band leader, Will Osbourne, decides to reconcile father and son and brings Warren to the club. Despite his misgivings, Warren has a wonderful time and resolves to apologize to Danny. On his way backstage, however, Warren is waylaid by club employees Larry, Moe and Curly, who mistake him for a process server and toss him outside. A few days later, Warren's employee, Bascomb, finally manages to serve Danny with the summons and reveals that Carol had also been hired by Warren as a process server. Without listening to Carol's explanation, Danny angrily sends her away. After Warren, who has returned to the club with Marie, tears up the summons and tells his son that he approves of the club, Danny runs after Carol and brings her back.
