As good-natured but befuddled Antoine Maréchal leaves Paris for a holiday, his car is demolished in a collision with a Bentley that belongs to wealthy Leopold Saroyan. Next day Saroyan offers to make amends by flying Antoine to Naples and arranging for him to drive a friend's Cadillac to Bordeaux. Delighted to have a paid vacation, Antoine readily agrees. Unknown to him, however, a fortune in contraband goods has been concealed on the car: the bumpers are solid gold coated with chrome plating, the tailfins are packed with heroin, and stolen jewels are immersed in the battery fluid. Oblivious to the fact that he is being tailed by Saroyan and his henchmen and also by a trio of hijackers led by the notorious La Souris, Antoine thoroughly enjoys his trip, stopping to offer a ride to a seductive hitchhiking manicurist and, later, a beautiful German girl en route to a nudist colony. As the two rival gangs take potshots at each other, the guileless Antoine rolls merrily along, unaware that bit by bit his precious cargo is either being stolen by garage mechanics or lost on the road. Eventually Antoine realizes that he has been duped; incensed, he cleverly outwits his pursuers by luring them into a police trap. His joy at being still alive is enhanced when he accidentally discovers the world's largest diamond hidden on the Cadillac's steering wheel.
