  • Powerful Powell performance

    William Powell gives a fine performance in this early Paramount talkie. His character is complex and human -- hard and unforgiving in some situations, but compassionate in others. Well directed, with a great script, the film leads inexorably to a downbeat ending. A key film in Powell's career and more evidence of his acting skill.
