Helen Marjorie Fowler's novel was published in the U.S. in 1953 under the title The Intruder, which was also the working title of the film. A October 10, 1955 Daily Variety news item reported Allied Artists purchased Fowler's novel as a vehicle for actor John Ericson. A studio production sheet credited the screenplay to Cyril Hume, Warren Douglas and Lewis Arnold. Only Douglas, along with David Evans, is credited onscreen, and the contribution of Hume and Arnold to the completed film has not been determined. Certain exterior sequences were filmed in the town of Sierra Madre, CA, according to an April 8, 1956 Los Angeles Examiner article.
