Fantastic Film-Hero Doctor
Am planning to read James Hilton's book, not just because he's a good author, but was highly impressed by this dvd.Gives richly deserved credit to a very brave man serving his country, and putting his own life on the line for 12 survivors of a Japanese attack on their cruiser.Normally I have little praise for Cooper's "laconic" demeanor. But Cooper,Signe Hasso,Carl Esmond,Stanley Ridges,Morton Lowry,George Macready I absolutely loved.Paul Kelly's character was a little irritating until he helped the little boy whose mother was killed by the Japanese.
Really needs to be seen, and often.Gary Cooper as hero doctor Croy Wassell, who saved 12 silors and their captain from certain death, not just capture and those other heroes who ensured their evacuation to Australia.Signe Hasso rightly deserves much praise over a decent enough Laraine Day,and Carl Esmond as the heroic Dutch officer who loses his life guiding their ship to safety.
Watched dvd Last Noc
Watched this several times since purchase-AWESOME!Everyone involved should be proud, even liked Cooper,he really did more of what I'd consider an Oscar worthy performance. My favorites:Signe Hasso, and the 2 "Dutch" officers,Carl Esmond and George Macready (thanks for casting both these gentlemen, love them both).Definitely needs to be shown Veteran's Day,D-Day,Memorial Day.

The Story of Dr. Wassell
This is a wonderful movie, based on a ture story. It should be shown during Memorial Day or Veterans Day weekend.
Wonderfully warm movie about what a wholesome, dedicated physician was able to do for his patients during WWII. It leaves you feeling good about this courageous, factual story.
A true war story from World War II
- James E. Oldham
Gary Cooper stars as Dr. Coryadon M. Wassell who winds up in the US Navy and is assigned to a hospital in Java, with many injured sailors from the USS Marblehead, that was sunk by Japanese. This is an unbelievable but true story. There really was a Dr. Wassell. Just as in Sergeant York, Gary Cooper portrays another war hero. Well worth seeing if you can find a place to watch it.
