Stolen Holiday,or frozen in time...
As directed by Michael Curtiz, this 1937 Warner Brother major exploitation of it's 'star' Kay Francis, also found a worthy script (Warren Duff & Virginia Kellogg) and screen-play (Casey Robinson) based upon a real & shady contemporary entity, (Alexandre Stavisky). Orry-Kelly's superb costume designs for the natural beautiful Kay-as Nichole, based upon a real Coco Chanel contemporary fashion model character (Arlette Simon),are not so far fetched for this story.Brilliant acting as by Claude Rains (as Stefan Orloff, really Stavisky),as the master crook & banking thief, gives even more credibility to the story line. The rest of the (usual) Warner cast players are also excellent, especially Ian Hunter, who actually ends up getting what he wants! There are some light silly moments as well, but so what!Any viewer of this film is more ever always distracted by the stunning Kay,whom every male wanted,& every woman wanted to be. Orry-Kelly never had to dress Kay up like a Christmas tree to make her look better (like other actresses),as everything always 'fit'for Kay!This kind of movie,in retrospective,is iconic chic of the mid-1930 s,almost frozen in time, something Warner Brothers could not have realized at the time.
It's all about the Gowns and Orry-Kelly

Yes, I love Claude Rains, and Kay Francis. But this was an Orly-Kelly movie! Wow such beautiful gowns, each one a classic. I wonder did he design all the gowns for the movie? Just fabulous. TCM should show the documentary about Orly-Kelly "Women I've Undressed". He has dressed all the major stars, Bette Davis, Kay Francis, Marilyn Monroe and more. I have the book, and it is beautifully done.

I was deeply engrossed in all aspects of this wonderful film, only to have to leave for work. Why show it at eight in the morning? Deeply unfair. Please TCM, give it a another showing at a more accessible hour. Please..... !
Claude Rains Steals the Show
I would have chosen Claude Rains over Ian Hunter in this story. Hunter, a fine actor, had a thankless role as the love interest tall enough to be a good match for Kay Francis. But Rains gets all the good lines and is a very interesting character. DEfinitely worth a viewing.
Let's see it again
Unfortunately, I completely missed this showing. I know this is not a masterwork, but the cast is filled with gems and Francis & Rains together... OK, OK... Rains in such a role is worth the view.Please.Love to rate it but haven't seen it. Yet.
Reason for not Showing
I watch Turner Classic Movies all the time. They repeat a lot of movies. Why have they only shown this movie once in 6 years???? Bill
