  • Stepping Out starring Liza Minnelli

A real treat seeing this gem of a back stage musical with lots of drama. I can not believe that I did not know until this May that the film existed. I have seen every Liza Minnelli film I have ever heard of...but this 1998-99 film was not promoted by Paramount Studios. I have now been searching for a DVD of Stepping Out. Thank you TCM for showing this excellent film.

  • Amazing Cast In This Underrated Gem

Easily one of the most interesting, and eclectic casts I've come across in quite some time.Though the subject matter of this film is not one that normally interests me, Liza Minnelli and the OUTSTANDING band of supporting players drew me in almost immediately, and wouldn't let go until the final credits were rolling. My only criticism, is that we end-up learning very little about most of the film's supporting characters (my FAVE, Andrea Martin (as "Dorothy"), is CRIMINALLY underused). I realize that with a cast of this size it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to include a detailed backstory for everyone, but a little bit more detail in the "lives" of these characters would have been nice.Other than that, the film provides a refreshing, incredibly good time, and is not to be missed....

I loved watching this film! It comes the closest to showing off the talents of Liza Minelli. I have seen her perform live a couple of times. This film comes the closest to showing Liza in the best light. She really is given the opportunity to show off her talent. I really enjoyed being introduced to this film. Thank you!

Never saw this movie. Watched it this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. Too bad this movie was not promoted by its studio. It really is a good movie, and I would watch again.

  • A Movie with Great Charm and Heart

It's rare when there's an entertaining movie that appeals on so many levels as this one. All of the players are exceptional. They play their roles believably and with on-target timing and skill. All of the players, from Liza Minelli and Shelly Winters to Andrea Martin, Ellen Greene, Jane Krakowski, Julie Walters, the incredible Bill Irwin, and the others turn in star performances but still manage to offer an entertaining story and working as a seamless ensemble. It's a pity this movie did not receive more attention when it was first released. A big "thank you" to TCM for highlighting this wonderful film.

I didn't have much hope for this film after reading the synopsis, and tuned in half-heartedly. But I was quite happily surprised! I found the characters real and likeable, and I came to care about them. BY the end of the film I was really cheering for them. I thought there were several touching scenes, and it was overall entertaining. I saw Liza many years ago at Carnegie Hall, and her dancing in this film brought back good memories. Not too bad, not too bad at all.

I was really pleased to watch this film (with Liza Minnelli and several other fine performers) the other night; although I had seen it once before, many years ago, I had seen the original London production on stage in 1985. It ran for 3 years in London and also played on Broadway. This is a thoroughly entertaining film; it's filled with humour, pathos, and also great dancing. It's a story about ordinary people rising above their fears and inhibitions.Liza Minnelli is terrific in this film,as are Shelly Winters, Bill Irwin, Jane Krakowski, Ellen Greene and others.I wish TCM would put it on the schedule again for more people to have the opportunity to see it. It seems to have been released under the radar, and is not even available on Netflix or Blockbuster etc. I highly recommend it.
