I knew a movie about Gertrude Lawrence's career had been made. I knew little else. I just viewed the movie and holy cow: Awesome. Nearly three hours long but compelling throughout. Julie Andrew's singing and acting talent is awesome and her dancing far surpassed my expectations. The dance numbers prepared by Michael Kidd are wonderful, the scenery tops and the story line consistent. The acting and singing throughout is compelling, kudoos to Julie and Daniel Massey as Noel Coward. Julie's talent always humbles me.

  • Better than than say, STAR! is a musical must!

One of the best bio musicals of all time! Perfectly captures the era and the world of the musical theatre. Julie Andrews doesn't attempt to play Gertrude Lawrence but suggest her and is superb (and one of her best performances). Daniel Massey as Noel Coward is excellent as is Lennie Hayton musical scoring (he was robbed of an Oscar); Donald Brooks costumes and Michael Kidd choreography. the screenplay stumbles in spots (why they didn't include "King and I" -so perfect for Andrews (and her fans) is a real mystery). But still, it's wonderfully produced, and despite what critics said at the time, one of the better musicals of the sixties.
