I Like You Too Paul Newman
When I first saw this movie I couldn't believe I was watching Paul Newman. I really saw him as Rocky Graziano and not Paul Newman. His whole physical appearance and demeanor screamed boxer. I read where James Dean was supposed to play this role, and while I like him well enough I could not imagine him doing justice to the part the way Newman did. Even during the movie Newman seemed to change into a full-fledged Graziano - his facial features, maybe he bulked up a bit. I'm not sure exactly how he did it, but to me that is true greatness when an actor such as Newman can make me see past him to the real character. I'm not a boxing fan and thankfully there was so much more to this movie I watched it without pause. It just seemed so "real" with humor, tears, joy, defeat, and a final contentment in one's own life. I think this is a great movie for everyone, young and old. It has lessons to it without being preachy and it's the kind of film that makes you feel you're not alone when life beats you down - there's a way up for everyone in finding peace with yourself.
Leave it to Robert Wise...
- Joseph Burkholder
...to make two of the best boxing films ever; The Set-Up, and this film, which I might add IS available on DVD.
As inspirational a life story as there ever was.
From the opening credits, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" as sung by Perry Como to the closing line of the film as stataed buy Paul "Rocky G" Newman the wheels were set in motion for this wonderful experience. The difference between this and Stallone's Rocky is that this really happened. Add this to your DVD collection.
A Must See on TCM
If you like boxing movies, this is a must see. I'm not a big fan of boxing movies, but this one I like. Newman is great. All of the acting in this movie is great. The beautiful actress that plays Rocky's wife is stunning. The Black and White cinematography of New York is excellent. And it is funny in parts. Great story.
