Another vote for Snowfire on DVD

I saw this on TV again last year, for the first time since I was a little girl in Chicago, watching it on Family Classics with Frasier Thomas. It took me back to sitting on the floor, eyes glued to the TV, munching popcorn bathed in real butter & drinking Hi-C. And I too, wanted a horse because of this movie. Even when we moved out of the city & onto a farm, I still wanted one, but was told that we couldn't afford one. That never stopped me from daydreaming of owning one. I had over 200 horse stories (the whole Black Stallion series) & loved it when a horse movie came on the TV. I've seen them all & still watch them when they come on. I'd LOVE to have this movie on a DVD. I searched for it once & saw that it could be ordered from WGN, as it had the rights to it. I don't know if that's still correct. This movie needs to be in the hands of our kids & grandkids, so that it can continue to be loved for generations to come. They sure don't make Hollywood movies like this anymore. Too bad. Be great if they did.

I finally found 'Snowfire' on DVD and purchased it along with 'Smoky' (with Fred MacMurray, Anne Baxter, and Burl Ives). These were two of my favorite horse movies as a kid. Tonight I watched Snowfire for the first time in 40 years. Watching 'Smoky' next. Both are available at 'www.Santaflix.com' on DVD. They arrives very fast, in just a few days. I'm still in a state of awe that after all these years I am finally being reunited with these wonderful movies that have stayed with me all these years!! I feel 7 years old again.....

As a small child I saw this movie, I was then and always have been madly in love with horses. At this movie they were giving away a foal. I so wanted that horse but never had it. When I was in my 20's I bought a horse that was almost the same colour as Snowfire. She then had a baby and he was a bay with a design. I named him Starfire, I imagined that if Snowfire had a baby that looked like him that is what it would have been called. I remember that movie very well. Both of my horses were arabs and I miss them dearly, they are both gone now and I am 60 and still would buy that movie if it came out in DVD. I miss the feel of horses, the smell of them, their soft velvet lips. My horses would kiss me and I them.

I too have looked all over for this movie and cannot find it for purchasing. I saw it in a movie theater as a child who loved horses. Now I am a grandmother and would love to show it to my granddaughter. I wish I had someway of recording it.

I went to the movies growing up and saw "Snowfire". My love of horses grew through the years and today I own two 1/2 Arabian Palominos. I would love to see "Snowfire" again, and was wondering how I could watch it? Could someone help me out with this please?? Thank you. Sincerely, Sharon, a horse lover

I remember seeing this movie in Salmon. ID when I was five years old. It was wintertime and there was a pile of old snow out in front of the theater. I jumped up on it, pretending to be Snowfire. This movie really made an impression on me, though only the scene where Molly is going to brand her own chest stuck with me. I'd love to see it again!!

I'm 60, and I've tried to find this movie in the past to no avail. For some reason, today I decided to search for "Snowfire", and I thought it came out in 1958 (amazing how I can remember that when I can't remember anything else these days!). And there it was ---- I am so happy that it's going to be shown this summer!!! I put in my e-mail address to be reminded, and I also put it on my calendar in case they forget to remind me (don't want to take any chances of missing it). I LOVED this movie, although I can't remember much of the plot. I just remember that it was my favorite childhood movie and I didn't want it to end -- and I absolutely remember exactly what Snowfire looked like, and him sailing over the fence in the corral! It's nice to see how many people have the same feelings about this movie that I have. Thank you TCM!

Help! Need more information!

I missed Snowfire when it aired a few months back, but I was richly blessed by the postings here, especially from "MindyM" 12/23/11. Thanks Mindy for sharing your personal info about your family. I saw "The Bashful Elephant" in 1962 when I was 7 and have had the same lifelong connection with the story and the young actress, your aunt Mollie. The movie had the same captivating effect as others have described here about Snowfire. With the exception of a few promo pix of Mollie on an Irish Wolfhounds site, there is precious little information available about this talented family and no other photos posted anywhere of the McGowan sisters, their Dad or uncle. I think there's a lot of interest out there, and I was hoping that MindyM might help us all out and enrich our experience with any information she might feel free to share. Maybe another posting could be a good start. Thanks again, Mindy!!!

FAMILY CLASSIC!

I grew up in 1960's Chicagoland watching WGN channel 9 TV. There were 8 channels to TV then, 2, 5, 7, 9, 11. If your UHF antenna was working you could also get channels 26, 32, and 44. I would wait until Family Classics was on and just pray they would show "Snowfire" (My odds were good. they only showed about a dozen different movies) When I heard that music and saw that beautiful white horse running through the old western countryside, I would scream for my sisters and we'd watch it. With our sleeping bags, crayons, coloring books and popcorn (stove - popped of course). As most other girls at the age of 5 or 6, I was obsessed with horses. Molly McGowan was my hero, and I wanted to be her so bad and have a pet like Snowfire! If I could only have one memory to sum up my childhood, this would be it. I have been trying to find this movie for over 35 years. Many others feel as I do, and are trying to get this movie resurrected. Chicago folk lore says it disintegrated in it's can and turned to dust in some warehouse kept by WGN and no other copies exist. I bought a bootleg copy on E-bay - taped off of TV in a 1980's broadcast - terrible quality, and the commercials badly edited. It's one of my most prized possessions. PLEASE VOTE AND DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO PRESERVE THIS MOVIE, AND GET IT RELEASED ON DVD!

A family favorite...

Hi. I am the granddaughter of Dorrell McGowan and great-niece of Stuart. My mom is Melodie, the older sister in the movie. Although my grandfather made this movie, he and his brother, with their own money, our family did not have a copy because the old film rotted in his garage in a canister. So, I grew up hearing story after story from my mom about my aunt Molly- who died before I was born- and the fabulous two summers they spent filming this movie in Utah and Iverson Ranch (I think) in California. I really appreciate TCM for resurrecting this and showing it. (And, whoever cleaned it up, revitalizing it.) I also appreciate all your comments and share them with my mom. My grandfather and his brother loved to write kid and animal stories: Littlest Hobo - movie and TV series - Bashful Elephant, This Way and That a Way, and Mister Too Little. Snowfire is a great example of the work they did - kind of hokey, definitely flawed, but with a ton of heart. In a way, that's who they were as people. Thanks to all the fans that helped resurrect this movie - as it was my mom's favorite childhood memory. And, after filming she and Molly got to keep one of the horses that played Snowfire. (I think my grandfather paid them with a horse - that would be just like him.)

This movie has remained the most dear to my heart. My sister and I tried to get it released for my 40th birthday, but to no avail. I am now almost 57 and cannot help but wonder; with all the junk printed on DVD, why has it been so difficult to get this movie made on DVD? It seems there is quite a following, and I would love to see it in its entirety once again before I leave this life. Adding it to my movie collection would be even better. What are you waiting for? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

Snowfire is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have checked the TCM website several times over the last few years hoping to find it. I came home on Sunday and caught the last 15 minutes of the movie and couldn't believe it was airing and I missed it. I hope it will be airing again soon

Wow!!! Like many of the posts on here - I only saw this move once in the early 60`s in a theatre before I even started school, but I NEVER forgot it! For years I tried to find a dvd or a website or some info about it to no avail. I started to think that maybe I`d imagined it or it had a different title. On a whim, I searched for it online today and found many kindred souls who loved it as much as I did. I would LOVE to see this one again. Anyone have any ideas on how to get a copy?

Snowfire is a Great classic family values western. Last time I saw Snowfire was 46 years ago on Family Classics with Frazier Thomas in Chicago, 1965. Curiously, this movie has lived in the recesses of my heart all these years. I thought it was destroyed. I was amazed TCM had it on today, 7/30/2011. The theme song of the movie is magical. You can hum it all day and it makes you feel good. The scenery is spectacular and the orchestration is beautiful. The writing and directing bring out the spam of difference in simple belief, between children and adults. The innocence and intrigue of the story line is fantastic. There is action, adventure, belief, drama, humor, love, and romance; family values style. The potential "branding" scene was written brilliantly, as was the scene with the "shrink" who got shrunk. In this day of stress, strife and digital shallowness, we all need something to believe in, whether angels, heroes or talking horses. I succumbed to tears of joy throughout the entire movie as my recesses of childhood beliefs and emotions swept through me and overcame my contrived adult intellect and logical system of thought. How refreshing! It brought back to me a place of simple belief I had long forgotten, that I will now never let go of again. Children have a belief system, adults have allowed to elapsed, called childlike faith. It's not the age, it's the mileage. There is something there for Dads, Moms, children, even teens, who are willing to look past the "old Fashion" cinematography. This is a family values movie actually performed by a Hollywood family. God bless The McGowan family who did a terrific job preserving and sharing their family values. God bless TCM and Mr. Turner for finding this movie and bringing it back to our culture. And what a way to re-introduce Snowfire, on early Saturday morning westerns. TCM is where the old west American values are still alive. Please continue to make Snowfire a regular presentation on TCM.

Wow.. saw this movie only once on a Saturday afternoon at the town movie theatre as a young child and never forgot it. Even the theme and the happy tearful ending. Happy to have seen it again after all these years on TCM! Great Saturday morning movie and now a renewed childhood memory.

Even better than the 48-year-old memory!
- Susan
- 7/30/11
TCM aired Snowfire this morning--a Saturday morning, right where it belongs--and it was even better than I remembered! I last saw this movie on TV in Miami, around 1963, at age 6. I was at my best friend's house, and we were playing with our plastic Breyer horses. Her older brother told us there was a great movie on that we would like, and he was right! Actually, I remembered nothing of the plot, which I today discovered was quite engaging. Rather, my memory was of the iconic image of the white horse standing on the cliffs or running across the mountainside. Naturally, my friend and I promptly named one of the Breyers Snowfire. (By the peculiar but exact logic of children, we determined that only one of us could have a plastic horse named Snowfire, and since we saw the movie at her house, it would have to be her horse.) My favorite all-time horse-lovers' movie was The Black Stallion, which I still love--but Snowfire is now number one in my book. It will have a place on my overstuffed DVR as long as the DVR lasts. Thanks for showing it, TCM. It looked wonderful. Lorimar showed up as the distributor at the end--if they are still around, they should re-release it.

I've thought about this movie off and on for years. Never could remember the name, but always remembered it was the story of a little girl who could talk to a wild stallion. I remembered she tried to brand herself which is how I goggled it to discover the name of the movie. To my sadness, it's not available on DVD, but I just discovered you are going to show it July 30th, 2011-next Saturday morning! Yeah!! With so much garbage in the theaters today, I am excited to see a great oldie. I'm 56, grew up in the city, but moved to the country soon after I was married (almost 36 years ago). Then I was able to fulfill my childhood dream of owning a horse. Don't ride anymore and have only one old lame horse left, but I still love to watch others enjoy the beauty and grace of the horse. Called my cousin to record it for me next week. Can't wait to see it. Thanks for airing it!!

Amazing #1...just last evening while dining with friends, I spoke of Snowfire! I saw it when I was about 4 or 5 years old and it has remained with me since. I loved this movie. Amazing #2...I still hear the song in my head, "....Snowfire was white as the falling snow......Snowfire, Snowfire, Snowfire". Amazing #3... no one I know has ever seen it. I decided to do a quick search to send information or a synopsis to my friends. What a delight to see that one of my favorite channels will be airing it soon...Amazing #4. I've requested the reminder (thank you TCM) and will also set my TiVO. A-MAZING ....I'm so thrilled and too excited (huge smile)!!!!!

I look forward to seeing this again in its entirety. I've seen it once, as a young lad, in 1964. Ones memory is imperfect; I thought it was "Starfire." No wonder I couldn't find it. Does anyone know who recorded the intro song? That's what caught my attention. Back at that time, one never knew when and if he would see/hear something again. So, one listens closely. Sure sounds like The Sons of the Pioneers to me, or someone close to them.

I grew up in a small town of 4,000 in north central Indiana. My Dad ran the projector for the owner of a small theater there. My mom sold the tickets. How I remember this film! I had thought I had seen it around 10 years of age. Now I find I was closer to 12 or 13! Kids weren't in such a hurry to grow up in those days! Because of family circumstances, I think I watched this film at the theater at least a half dozen times and never tired of it! Others mentioned it was on Family Classics on WGN in Chicago but I never saw it there. I was heartsick when I was unable to see it on TCM this May. I hope you will do all you can to get this wonderful movie on DVD. I, like so many others have been searching for it forever! From the looks of other reviews you won't have a problem selling them! I hope you will show this wonderful movie again and often.

After 45 years, I finally was able to watch Snowfire a movie that has only been in my memories!! It was just as good as I remembered. The best part was that there were no commercials! Once Family Classics went off the air, I don't think it was ever aired in the Chicago area again. Thank you Turner Classic Movies! Also thanks goes out to all the Snowfire fans, that sent emails alerting me to the airing on TCM!! Special thanks goes out to the McGowan Family for making and releasing this treasure!!

I had remembered seeing a film about a white horse when I was young but could never find it and could not remember the name of the movie. But, when I saw "Snowfire" on the TCM schedule, I knew right away it was the movie I saw with my scout troop long ago. It was as heartwarming and fun to watch as I remembered. I remember wanting to be that girl who could talk and be friends with a beautiful white horse. I don't have a white horse now but a beautiful chestnut Morgan. I talk to him but he doesn't talk to me. Oh well, only in movies, so we can dream.

I have dreamed of the day when I could see "Snowfire" again. I always have been a horse lover and became a horse owner at 23 years old. My first horse was white because I wanted one that looked like "Snowfire". Something about this movie stayed with me my whole life. I am 61 now and for the first time in so many years, I'll be watching this terrific movie. Thanks TCM. I am your lifelong fan.

I am sitting here almost in shock that I found you are showing Snowfire on May 17th. I'm 58 years old and still remember the one and only time I seen this movie, I think on Family Classics. For years I've tried to find info on it. No one in my family or my friends can recall it. I almost started to believe I may have dreamed the whole thing. I want to thank you so much. I have 3 grandchildren all the age of 7 and I will DVR it and have a Snowfire party with them. TCM has always been my favorite channel and I have made many converts to the old black and whites. I just recently missed The Uninvited with Ray Milland and decided I am going to order The TCM Guide so I'll never miss a chance to see my favorites again. You have made me very happy. Why has it never been available on DVD as all the others that played on Family Classics? I thought it must have been lost.

I would love to see this movie again. And I would love to own a copy. I was born in 1952, and I watched this movie as a child every time it was shown at my Grandparent's movie theater during it's 1st run release in 1958-1959. It made a big, indeligible impression. I still remember the theme song, most of the words words & melody. I have no words to express how disappointed I am to learn that this amazing classic aired and I missed it -- wasn't even aware that it had been preserved. I thought it was a treasure lost in the film archives forever. There can never be enough wholesome, positive family value movies available for young viewers (and the young at heart). PLEASE consider releasing this on DVD - all 73 minutes, preferably in color. And please air it again and let me know when it will be shown Thank you Catherine Nierescher Hampton, VA

I watched this a a child also.. I was born in 1960. I can remember the words to the title song: Snowfire was white as the falling snow Fire was his spirit men were his foe I could cry at the thought of never seeing this movie again... It was a story of love for an animal that surpasses our understanding. This movie formed my understanding that there are deep soul connections with the animals we love that surpasses all understanding or explanations. This child and "her" horse were eternally connected. what a loving wonderful movie!!!

This is the first movie I can remember being taken to as a child. It is also the only movie I can remember going to with my mother before she died of cancer. I would love to see it again. Even if you don't put it on home video could you please put it into your schedule sometime. I watch TCM as much as possible and enjoy all the great classic movies. TCM has also helped my children (and some of their friends) to grow up enjoying classic black and white movies (some kids will not watch a movie that is not in color) and not just the crash and bang movies of today. There are many wonderful movies today but the classics are a wonder of story telling and art. This is the one movie I would love to share with my family but have not had the opportunity as yet. Thank you so much for your time. Elaine Taylor, Avid Fan I have not seen this movie since I was a child so I do believe it would be fair to rate it as it would be from a childs point of view.

I watched this movie every time it was on family classics as I grew up and it is the best story of a horse ever written. Why is it that we cannot get this movie on DVD. There are horrible movies on DVD that shouldn't even be seen yet this movie is not available. Please listen to the folks leaving the comments on this wonderful movie. Even if this movie had to be ordered would be a way to go. Folks, please vote to have this movie released. Thank you

Since my mother woke me up to watch this movie when I was a child I have dreamed of seeing it again. When I moved to L.A. I tried to find it through the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Library. They told me it was a McGowan family project and Warner Bros had bought it years later but when I finally got to the archives the reel was gone. They directed me to the last surviving member of the family - Molly McGowan. When I wrote to her she had died the previous week at the MPAS Nursing Home. What else can be done?

have been looking for this movie for over 30 years. I wanted my kids to enjoy it like I did. Now my kids have kids and none of them have seen this movie. We need more of these movies to be played again. Too much of "family" is gone.

Please re-release the 1958 movie Snowfire
- Tina Midby
- 9/7/08
I have seen so many old movies from the 50's released, but never this one. I am now 57 years old and still think about this movie. It made such an impression on me as a child. I can even still remember some of the words to the theme song. It is a wonderful movie for children, and I'm sure other adults who saw it as children would also be happy to see return to share it with their children - truly a family film. PLEASE see if it can at least be shown on TCM if not released in DVD.

I remember watching Snowfire when I was a young girl and forever it seemed I would never hear of this spectacular movie again. I was so elated when I found information about the movie online. I didn't realize there were so many others anticipating to see it again. I hope it will be aired so we all can enjoy a movie that meant so much to all of us. If someone who has the authority to release it, please allow the dedicated fans to enjoy a once in a lifetime classic. It would certainly bring back feelings of genuine appreciation of a beautiful masterpiece.

I've been trying to find this movie to watch with my kids before they grow up and if it's not released soon, it will be too late. I can't imagine why this film hasn't been fixed up and sold on DVD. My sisters and I loved it more than anything that was on Family Classics - and that show offered many great films for families. Please buy it!

I fondly remember the anticipation and excitement as a child when we heard that Snowfire would soon be apprearing on WGN's Family Classics. It was an event we looked forward to every year...along with Black Beauty! Bring them both back!

Snowfire Much Loved by Many!
- GaryDS

The entire Chicagoland area enjoyed the perennial favorite "Snowfire", which was offered on WGN's Family Classics program for many years. I'm sure that this feature would be extremely popular with many 'baby boomers', who grew up loving the white stallion. Bringing it to TCM would allow us to reintroduce it to a whole new generation, or two!

Please,Please give us "Snowfire"

When I was 11 years old, I saw this movie in the local neighborhood theatre. I remember singing the theme song to myself while walking the four blocks to my home. (still remember it) For some reason, this movie never left my memory banks. I have thought of it sooo many times over the years and have searched for it everywhere, to no avail. I know TCM must have it in their power to obtain rights to this movie and show it or produce it on DVD for everyone's enjoyment. I know for a fact, I am not the only person who remembers this movie so fondly and would love to see it again and purchase it for our own. I would love to have it for myself as well as for my two granddaughters. Please, please try to come through for all of us who loved Snowfire and are loyal TCM viewers.

Snowfire was my favorite childhood movie...
- Donna D.

I saw this movie in Post, Texas when I was 8 years old and it was my favorite from then on. I had quite an imagination and relived the movie many times playing. Probably about 25 years ago I saw too late that it had been shown on TBS, and I've never seen it listed to show again. Being 57 years old, I would love to be able to show this movie to my grandchildren and also for a couple of hours revive my imagination to a more touching and heartfelt time.... please seriously consider either showing it on TCM at least.... Thanks!

I remember watching this as a child, which was MANY years ago :-). It was one of the few shown on Family Classics that I actually looked forward to seeing each time, and it's the only one I even remember watching back then. I'd love to share this movie with my son now, but it's not available. I don't buy a whole lot of movies, but this is one that I definately would. Please make this movie available to those of us who love it. Thank you.

We Want SNOWFIRE
- Linda P.

An entire generation grew up with the touching, heartfelt story of Snowfire! Just because the movie doesn't boast any "major" stars is no reason to deprive us from reliving a wonderful childhood memory. My Sundays revolved around what wonderful movie was going to be shown on Family Classics and it seems that this is the only one that has disappeared. All the rest, Robinhood, Treasure Island, Boys Town, Little Women, Flicka, Black Beauty, Lassie, etc. have lived on - but then again they all had big stars, or those who became big stars. Nonetheless - this is a classic for all of us that grew up in the 50's and 60's. For once, put aside the all mighty dollar and release it! You may be suprised at the reception you will get. After all - you continue to release and re-release - and create anniversary additions again and again for the same movies. If you let the public know it is out there i am "sure" it will be worth your while! At the very least play it on TV - Yours is the best of the classic movie channels that is still without commercial interruptions - and I will watch a movie on your channel that I have viewed dozens of times rather than watch a movie on AMC with commercials. Don't forget what you are all about. How about a Horse Theme movie day?

Remaster Snowfire
- Katie O.
- 8/27/07
Since those of us who grew up with Snowfire grew up with many black and white movies and television shows, why not remaster Snowfire in black and white if the Eastman color has gone bad on the film? Snowfire fans (I don't think) would even care if it wasn't in color. If that's what's holding it up from being released, please think about it. It's the movie we want to see and enjoy a nice trip down memory lane. This is a G rated movie, I think lots of families would love to have this in their movie collection. I saw this movie at the show in 1958, I went in at noon and my Mom had to come looking for me at 10:00 pm. I had sat there all day watching that movie over and over. I was 7. Whoever owns the rights to this movie, listen up...There are a LOT of Snowfire fans out here with children and grandchildren, with money to spend on your movie. Thank you--Katie O.

When this movie first came out I was about 9 or 10 I enjoyed it then and I have remembered it all these years. At different times over the years I have tried to locate this movie and have never been able to. I would love to see this movie again even if it was just on TV.
