Keep In Mind
When reading the review for this film, keep in mind that the New York stage was filled with actors who leaned far, far, far left-- the communist style. There idea of religion was that it was poison for the masses. So negativity was to be expected. This like any film has some interesting parts and some not so interesting but don't expect a fair review from the likes of Paul Newman who was from the New York stage.
What's impressive about the film is its stark, non-naturalistic visual setting. There is a real beauty here, reminiscent of German expressionism in its lonely representation of Rome in its spiritual poverty. Yes, Paul can't act, but how is this film any different from his others? It's all about Paul---and it's a bore.
Palane performance only reason to watch this mess
Back in the old days when I was much younger, this film was a big deal for anyone who was born and raised a Roman Catholic. At the time, I thought it inspiring. Today, it's pure schmalz fiction. Please! That silver headband and white dress on Pier Angeli was so over the top that it makes me retch. The real star of this film is Jack Palance and he gives a performance indicative of the roles he would come to play in later years. I love him in this film, as he brings an evil greed to it that is amazing. I can certainly see why Newman apologized for his role in this film. He is horrible in it and his acting is atrocious, completely different from later years when he dropped a lot of the Lee Strasberg stuff and let his personality come out!
Filme nota 10
Excelent religious film
- Jack The Hat
I worked at the Stanley theater in Philadelphia when this film was released. I had the ability to go into any Warner Brothers theater for free and bring whom ever I wished. This of all the films released that year was my familes and friends favorite. I think Paul Newman disliked this film over all is because many in Hollywood are anti-religious.
a great movie actor's debut

I suggest that even though Mr Newman felt it necessary to apologise for the shortcomings of his role in the film of Costain's THE SILVER CHALICE now that he has gone from us it is imperative that his film debut be treasured and available to those of us who would love to see it.
