Self-appointed Preacher Hawker and family, claiming the region of Montana known as Big Sag as their own, try to run Sam Barbee and his son Lee, newly arrived from Texas, out of the territory. Knowing that her husband is a coward, Mrs. Hawker takes over and secures Big Sag by sending her daughter Hannah into town with a note begging the assistance of Chan Bartholomew, owner of the First and Last Chance Saloon; but Hannah is delayed by a violent storm and meets Lee, with whom she falls in love. She finally arrives in town, and Chan tries to make love to her; but his alcoholic wife, Goldie, breaks up the affair by killing him. Preacher Hawker shoots Fargo, a killer hired by Chan, then performs a marriage ceremony for Hannah and Lee, resolving never to touch a gun again.
