Lowly Pvt Frigg {Paul Newman} feels he always gets the fuzzy lollipop until the Contessa opens his eyes to how & why respect is actually earned. The movie "feels" like it is actually two movies spliced together: the cushy 'captive' life in the Italian villa & the brutal life in the German POW camp... but it works, and works well. One of paul Newman's best.It would be a shame to let this movie deteriorate away. I carefully handle my VHS copy of this movie. It needs to be restored & placed on DVD.

I would love to see this film restored and shown on TCM. It is a fun, tongue in cheek and family friendly spoof war film, which has a good cast and is very well done. When six allied brigadier generals are captured by Italians in a bath house and are incarcerated in an Italian villa in luxurious surroundings, they get so comfortable and are so disorganised they cannot agree on any kind of escape attempt so do nothing. Allied command in the person of James Gregory's General Homer Prentiss, sends arch escape artist Pvt Harry Frigg (Paul Newman) to get them out.To accomplish his mission Frigg is promoted to the temporary rank of Major General and the fun ensues. We remember Paul Newman for many films, he has made some great ones and this is not bad by any stretch of the imagination. In a serious and ever more violent world, movies like this one deserve to be preserved and shown for what they are as well as who played in them. Come on TCM, go find this bit of film fun and let all of us once more enjoy it.

Paul Newman is very ill. I would like to see a Paul Newman film festival. One of the films should be The Secret War of Harry Frigg. It is a good comedy concerning Harry Frigg leading a POW prison break in Italy. He is a private who is always breaking out of prisons and is assigned to assist five generals in breaking out of a POW camp. His transition from a private to a general is assisted by a countess.
