Because of his criminal past, London shipping magnate John Brent is being blackmailed by a disreputable dentist, Ralph Beldon, who is aware of Brent's prison sentence for embezzlement. When Brent refuses to explain what he does with his money, his spoiled wife, Nicole, voices the opinion that there is another woman in his life and walks out on him. One night Beldon is visited in his office by a hooded stranger who threatens to expose him unless he drugs Brent during a dental appointment and extracts from him the combination to his company's safe. Beldon agrees, and the safe is subsequently robbed of £13,000. Scotland Yard's Hanbury suspects Brent of the theft and has him picked up for questioning. But Brent escapes and at gunpoint forces Beldon to confess to Hanbury that he helped set up the robbery. Brent is cleared, and suspicion falls on Alan Richford, Nicole's lover. Nevertheless, Hanbury remains dissatisfied with the case, and when Nicole admits her love for Richford, Brent confesses that he was the hooded stranger and the robber, and that Nicole was his accomplice. Deserted and disillusioned, Brent returns the stolen money.
