When, many decades after its release, I saw this film, I was prepared for the usual "let's put on a show" plot that movie studios did a lot in those days. Indeed, I understand this was one of a series Monogram made with the four leads (June Preisser, Freddie Stewart, Noel Neill, Frankie Darro), setting them in high school and, in this film, graduating them to college. I've never seen any of the others in the series so cannot comment on their musical quality, though Freddie Stewart's sweet singing must sound as good in the others.Watching this film, I was surprised that this Monogram "B" musical had some wonderful musicians just "sitting in" -- the likes of Russ Morgan, Candy Candido, Les Paul, Abe Lyman, Wingy Manone and Joe Venuti, among others. These great musicians just sat around and casually played together. The movie even threw in some interesting dancing by jitterbug champion Arthur Walsh. It's fun, too, to see Alan Hale, Jr. (nice-but-not-overly-bright Sarge) well before his more commanding Gilligan's Island days, and Noel Neill (cute-as-a-button Betty Rogers) before she became Metropolis' all-business Lois Lane, pal to TV's Superman. This movie was filmed at the Monogram Studios in Los Angeles, which became the studios of KCET, still located on the very same spot, as of the last time I was there. The music in this little movie is worth the purchase of the DVD. Some time ago I was able to buy a video tape of this film but have yet to find a DVD. It's a cute movie with wonderful music by historically great musicians. Hope someone makes a DVD of it and I hope to find out about it when they do.
