In Texas, at the border between Matthew Delaney's sheep ranch and Gabby Whittaker's Whirligig cattle ranch, Gabby finds the murdered body of Delaney. Because of the tensions between the two men, Delaney's supervisor, "Cactus" Kate Taylor, and his ranch foreman, Steve Anders, blame Gabby for killing their boss. A few days later, in the Chicago office of the Whirligig Cattle Syndicate, owner Don Williams tells his employee, Roy Rogers, to go to Texas and help Gabby end the growing feud between cattle and sheep ranchers. Back at the Delaney sheep ranch, Jill Delaney, who has inherited the property from her uncle, is riding with Kate when they hear gunshots which they assume are being fired by Gabby at their sheep. They go to town to visit Cole Gregory, the Delaney estate lawyer, and when Jill says she feels helpless about the sheep killings and will leave the ranch in the hands of Cole and Kate, Kate convinces her to stay. Just then, Gabby happens by Cole's office and Jill's pet lamb, Taffy, follows him back to his ranch. Roy then arrives and realizes that returning Taffy to Jill will be a good way to break the ice and discuss ending the feud. When he goes to the ranch, however, Anders and his men are suspicious and bring him to the ranch house as a captive. There, he tries to make peace with Kate and Jill by inviting them to a party, and comments on a prize lamb which is being delivered just as he leaves. That night at the party, as Roy impresses Jill by trying to bring the horse and sheep ranchers together, Anders secretly shoots the lamb, causing a fight to break out. The next day, Gabby and Roy save Jill when her car swerves out of control, and Roy asks her for a job as one of Anders' guards. When Anders hears that Roy has been hired, he chastises Cole for stealing Delaney's money, murdering him and starting the whole feud. Cole, who had rigged Jill's car in an attempt to kill her and gain control of the ranch, tells Anders to kill Roy. That night, Anders arranges for his men to shoot Roy during his guard duty, while at the same time, the horse ranchers in town, tired of Roy's meddling, also decide to kill him. As Roy stands watch, cattleman Don Williams shoots at him and Roy shoots Williams' hand. Anders' men see this and shoot both men, and while pretending to be dead, Roy hears them say that Anders was the mastermind behind the shooting. As soon as Anders' men leave, the cattle ranchers arrive and assume Roy has shot Williams, but Roy escapes. Meanwhile, Jill agrees to sell her ranch to Cole, but Roy calls her before she can and arranges to meet her secretly. Together, they realize that Cole is behind the trouble and Roy points out how Cole has tampered with her car. Just then the ranchers arrive, and when Roy runs, they pick up Gabby and follow him. Roy races to Jill's ranch, where Kate, hiding, sees Cole's men knock Roy out and discuss Delaney's murder. When the cattlemen get there, a gunfight starts, and soon the only sheep herder left alive is Cole. Cole corners Roy and is about to shoot when Kate shoots the lawyer from behind. Kate, Roy, Gabby and Jill all shake hands, and that night, everyone celebrates the end of the feud with a big party.
