Bandits Guy Russell and Matt Stone are about to be hanged when they are rescued by their buddy, Nevada Jones. The three then hold up a stagecoach for needed funds, and Matt heads for California, ostensibly to retire from crime. But in Sacramento he meets an old friend, lawyer Jeff Scott, and they become partners. Jeff supplies information about Wells Fargo shipments, and Matt, costumed and masked as The Black Bandit, holds up stagecoaches. In one holdup, singer-danseuse Lillie Malone attracts Matt's amorous eye; and Guy and Nevada, who also are on the stagecoach, become heroes by trying to prevent the robbery. After being hired as Wells Fargo drivers, they meet Matt in Sacramento and immediately suspect that he is the famed Black Bandit. Guy is no more successful in proving this suspicion, however, than he is in winning Lillie away from Matt. A $30,000 gold shipment sparks Guy and Matt to make rival robbery attempts. Unaware that T. L. Harper, the top Wells Fargo detective, is riding on the stagecoach, a decoy, Matt and Guy fail in their plans, but once again Nevada helps them escape. The three finally realize that there is no place left to hide and so they surrender. Before giving himself up, however, Matt spends his last night of freedom with Lillie, who has known for some time that he was the Black Bandit.
