Decent Secondary Pseudo-Dracula Role for Lugosi
- spadeneal
- 10/29/10
Technically, Bela Lugosi only appeared as Dracula onscreen twice, but he appeared several times as "DIABN" (Dracula In All But Name) for several studios other than Universal. Here he assumes two non-Draculan identities, and while Bela appears a tad off his usual game here it is still tremendously entertaining. You learn that one really ought not to remove the pin from a Vampire, and talking werewolves are much lamer than ones that don't talk. Camerawork, set dressing and Castelnuovo-Tedesco's music score are above par; tho cutting and direction is less so -- with Lew Landers if you could remember your lines and act a little you were better off than perhaps others. The Return of The Vampire(1943)

- 10/25/10
From Columbia Pictures no less comes Bela Lugosi as a Vampire/Armand Tesla/Dr. Hugo Bruckner. A story that transcends the early 20th century, Bela is resurrected during WWII, and begins his assault again , this time as Dr. Hugo Bruckner/Vampire ,Hungarian no less. The story takes place in the outskirts of London. Aided by his trusty werewolf/dog servant Andreas Obry(Matt Willis), Bela goes on a blood fest to satisfy his carnal cravings. Great work by the cast to create interesting characters with depth. Very atmospheric and entertaining, Director Lew Landers gets allot of mileage with low budget vehicle. Great fun, especially for Lugosi fans who enjoy his performances. 4 stars out of 5 , Thank you TCM.
