I'm guessing he means "Petrified Forest," not "Painted Desert" (or, since he spells desert with two S's, a colorful banana split) However, with this muddled fellow you never know for sure.
Rawhide has a very good, dramatic story told in a spare and straightforward manner. Even with a small cast and unembellished storyline, I don't see how it can be beat for holding your attention. Ty Power and Susan Hayward are both wonderfully intense, and gorgeous to look at. Super group of supporting actors playing the band of criminals that have them captive, too. Excellent, tightly focused moviemaking. Kudos to the director, the great stars, and all hands involved
A Western even Westen haters would like
The location is the only reason t his flic could be considered a Western. Is the PAINTED DESSERT a Western? The locals are SAME, in t hat both are secluded places, and the place where evil men come and take over. It could be a dessert island, a remote island, even a forgotten place in NYC. The key to this story is about bad guys who take over, are wickedly smart, have at least one crazy homicide bad guy and one extremely gullible and stupid member of the bad guys. Ty Power is not the helpless intellectual, Susan Hayward wants to protect a child, and for some reasons the critics fawn over Dessert rather then this film. I would rather watch this film ten times before Dessert. The hero is not a wimp, the heroine is not a pinning character. The world is full of characters like Davis and impractical people who could not defend themselves, or life without the help of others. Why that appeals to critics is beyond my comprehension. Desert was not saved from within, but from outside help. Rawhide's characters help themselves. For those who like just the surface of a film, Ty Power and Hayward are more pleasant to watch that a wimp and a whiner.
Rawhide An excellent Western

Susan Hayward is fabulous in Rawhide. She dominates the movie even with Ty Power in the cast! Also Jack Elam is a perfect as the ultimate villain! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Hugh Marlowe is a much maligned actor. If you watch him in this movie your opinion will change. He gives a superb performance. His performance turns a good movie into a very good movie.
Tense Western Drama
Just saw this on Tyrone Power eveing last night and was impressed by this spare stark drama Intense acting by all concerned. No frills script and cinematography keep the tension building till the final scene. Super attractive Haywood and Power don't let glamour get in the way of solid performances. Actors playing band of thieves are totally chilling. Thanks TCM for airing this unusual western.
This is a good western and should be released to the public on DVD.
