Perfect Blend of Romance & Adventure
- Simon Gillham
- 6/25/12
My favorite movie of all time. The Purple Plain features a tasteful romance as well as an unexpected adventure set on the harsh purple plain of Burma during World War II. The cast is superb and includes the lovely Win Min Than whom I have never seen in any other film. Her scenes with Gregory Peck are beautiful to watch as they are not overdone and melodramatic but subdued and poignant. The scenes following the plane crash remind the viewer that survival often depends on a positive attitude as much as anything else. The Purple Plain is filled with great small scenes. There is a scene in the village in which the Scottish missionary reveals the indescribable struggle that she and the Burmese endured to find some peace in their lives. On another level Peck's character is also struggling to find peace in his life. This movie is rarely even mentioned by Peck enthusiasts, perhaps because hardly anyone appears to have seen it. Thank you to TCM for offering it on occasion.

This is a very good movie. It takes place in WWII Burma. Peck is a pilot whose plane crashes in Japanese occupied territory. He has to make his way back to safety while carrying a wounded comrade. This is a drama and adventure movie all rolled into one. Very enjoyable!
