The Private Life of Henry VIII
- Dashiell B.
- 2/28/13
An entertaining and engaging biography of King Henry VIII & his wives. Laughton won the Best Actor Academy Award as the title character who memorably rips apart a mutton, great supporting work from Lanchester, Laughton's real-life wife, as Anne of Cleves. Costumes & sets perfectly recreate Henry's court, which is the setting of a story that shows a poignant look of Henry. A great British drama worth viewing. I give it a 4.5/5.

The portrayal of Henry VIII by Charles Laughton is a royal treat.(Pun intended) His acting in this role justifies the statement by Directors that he needed no direction, just turn on the camera and let him perform. The nuances of the persona of King Henry were captured splendidly and with perfect timing. I will treasure this film for many years to come.
