Pretty Baby (1950)
- Mr. Blandings
- 3/26/12
Surprisingly enjoyable comedy with more than a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. I say "surprisingly enjoyable" because of Betsy Drake, who was so incredibly annoying in "Every Girl Should be Married" that I was understandably worried at the outset. But she (or the director) managed to keep her grating mannerisms in check for this film. Or maybe it was because the former film was her very first and she was "trying too hard." In any case, I'm quite happy she didn't ruin this, her second film as well. Dennis Morgan turns in another solid performance as the dreamy object of Betsy's (this time un-scary) affections. Zachary Scott plays the role he does best very well, too. But it is Edmund Gwenn who turns in the most heartfelt performance as the miser who discovers his heart of gold.

Betsy Drake and Dennis Morgan play off each other with fun and sparks - quite an enjoyable movie, uplifting and comedic. Edmund Gwenn is also at his best as a gentle but financially potent character. Great writing, acting, even shots depicting the subways of NYC. Make sure you watch it the next time around!

Fun and Fluffy

This is a fluffy comedy with a little bite. Zachary Scott and Dennis Morgan are always solid enjoyable actors and have good rapport as business partners and then competing suitors. It's always fun to see Edmund Gwenn as the nasty guy. Lots of fun, enjoy it.
