  • Good for one viewing

The first remake of the 1925 classic is good for one viewing but it's more opera than horror. Claude Rains is not a very impressive Phantom and the way the story was reworked has caused this version to be the blueprint for further remakes instead of the 1925 version. I'm sorry, but this only gets one star. :(

I agree with the other poster. Loads of beautiful music. For the 40's the best film about opera. Great ensemble! Don't miss this film.

  • Best Opera on Film!

If you're an opera fan, you will enjoy this version of 'The Phantom of the Opera'. I think this film was the closest to LIVE opera as you can expect, especially for that year, 1943. The color was great and the overall acting, singing, costumes, etc. was magnificent!TCM, please add this under-rated Classic movie to your library!
