The movie about the war experience of Ira Hayes was not so much an action drama, as it was a window into the tortured soul of a man. He was a casualty of war; perhaps indirectly; but the result was still a tragedy. I am a huge fan of tony curtis, but cannot find this film anywhere; what a loss! I think this is his finest performance! TCM needs to rescue this film from whatever archive it's hiding in, and treat your loyal patrons!!!

I have not seen this movie. But, in TCM's recent 1hr interview with Tony Curtis, he referred to this movie as the one he is most proud of. When can we see it on TCM ?

I was pleasantly surprised after watching this. I wasn't aware that Tony Curtis had even been in it. Unfortunately, I missed the first third of the movie; however, I had read Flags of Our Fathers, and was able to pick up on the plot without any trouble. The only major difference between the movie and what I had read was the ending--Ira's death by exposure occurred somewhat differently than portrayed. I'd like to watch it again from the beginning. If you would like to read an excellent account of the Iwo Jima campaign, I highly recommend Flags of Our Fathers, written by James Bradley, the son of the Navy member of the War Bond trio. He gives an excellent account of Ira Hayes' life leading up to Iwo Jima and afterwards.

Why is it, when any film is made and it's main character is anything but caucasian, that some how race is involved? This film is about a man, who became an American hero against his will and how it touched his life --- nothing more! The film is depressing but is hard to let go of, once you start watching it.

I would like to know if you plan to run this movie on t.v. I've seen part of it one time and would really like to see the whole movie. If you could let me know where I could buy the movie or if and when you plan on playing it, please let me know.Thank you,Bob

Ira Hayes died from the result of a poker game when an argument between him and a friend continued after the game later that night. He did not die from being dissapointed because he was not elected a council member. Ira Hayes was drunk and when his friend shoved him he fell and hit his head on a rock in a ditch and left there. He died from exposure. The movie THE OUTSIDER is one of Tony Curtis' best films released in 1961 but it is semi biographical. Great war sequences and a stirring reenactment of the flag raising of Iwo Jima actually better then the movie Sands of Iwo Jima's reenactment of the flag raising
