Originally To Star Raft As Goff
Raft was wanted for Goff, but didn't think he had any good qualities,so passed on it.Bogie lobbied hard for the part, and was ticked when Ida Lupino refused to star with him-he was nsty in High Sierra, maybe because his ego was hurt by her top billing. She was perfect in her part.Great break for Garfield here, and in The Sea Wolf with Eddie Robinson,as Raft refused what he saw as a bit part.
The meek shall inherit the earth
A satisfying film noire where only one bad guy is killed. A daughter is saved from his evil, and the good guys get away with an fatal accident. They are morally saved because out of their own respect for life, they could not carrying out the planned murder as fate steps in to end the menace, played so well by John Garfield. His fate is sealed by the fear that hides behind his bluster as a "protection racket" thug, who picks on old men who just want to add a bit of relief to their ordinary lives. And as a bonus, they get to keep Garfield's wallet from the police by using a clever ploy. As a senior citizen this was a wonderful film. If only real life worked out so well!
Out of the Fog
Great movie. This was the first time I had seen this film. Thomas Mitchell and John Qualen were fantastic, as well as John Garfield. I still can't believe that I never saw this before. Hope you play it again soon. Also hope that it gets put on DVD soon.
Riveting at times, silly others, with some bad casting and also some incredibly warm and believable characters. Film noir with a heart. Loved the two old fishing buddies.Worth watching...now, when is it goingto be on again!?
