In the Pacific in 1943, an underwater demolition team (UDT) headed by Lieut. Morgan Hayes is picked up by an American submarine commanded by Capt. Emmett Carey. The team's mission is to destroy a sunken submarine to prevent its top-secret equipment from being salvaged by the Japanese; and Carey is ordered to avoid contact with the enemy until this mission is accomplished. Carey's crew resents both the alteration of the submarine's course and the overcrowding. They proceed to Bikini Island, where, aided by guerrillas, they determine the exact location of the sunken ship. In the course of these developments a romantic attachment is formed between Hayes and Reiko, one of the guerrilla band, but she is killed in a skirmish with the Japanese. The UDT successfully plants the explosives, however, and the men escape to the waiting American submarine.
