One of the great comedic westerns of all time. Excellent cast. Great musical score by the New Christy Minstrels, using actual musical instruments from the civil war era. funny script. If I'm not mistaken, the film was originally released in color in the theaters. databases show that it's black & white. Wonder what happened to the color version? Seems like I even saw it in color on network TV once after I got my first color TV in 1975 or so This film was the basis for the TV series F Troop with Ken Berry, Forrest Tucker and Melody Anderson.

There are so many bad movies on VCR/DVD that it is a shame such a funny - very funny - move like Advance to the rear is not available. Just thinking of some the those great comedy seans makes me laugh out loud. I wish I could find a copy./ George.
