Danny Thomas, the younger brother of nurse Elizabeth, is released from prison. After he visits his sister at the Brooklyn hospital where she works, Larry Craine, Beth's fiancé, offers to drive him home. Although Danny is determined to go straight, Larry drives him in a stolen car to a warehouse that he intends to rob. Danny went to prison without naming Larry as his accomplice, but now refuses to go along with Larry's plan. While they argue, Jim Barnes, a policeman, spots the car's stolen license plates and sneaks up on them. Larry shoots Jim and, when Danny will not leave with him, shoots him as well. Danny is killed and the police believe that the two men shot each other. Jim is taken to Beth's hospital. Larry lies to her about the events surrounding Danny's death and leads her to believe that Jim killed him in cold blood. His story is reinforced by the fact that Danny was shot in the back. When he visits Jim in the hospital, Inspector Francis Xavier Donohue informs him that the bullet taken from his wound matches one that killed another policeman. Donohue shows Jim a picture of Larry, and he identifies him as the man who shot him. Donohue suggests that Jim become friendly with Beth in hopes that she will lead them to Larry. Meanwhile, Larry has convinced Beth that she should lure Jim out in the open so that he can get revenge for Danny's death. At first, Beth is willing to go along with his plan, but as she gets to know Jim, she has second thoughts. Because he is not getting closer to his target, Jim hatches a plan to attract Larry. He goes to the seashore to convalesce and takes Beth with him as his nurse. There, Jim finds the bullet that was taken from Danny's body in Beth's purse and gives it to the police. Their cabin is surrounded by police, awaiting Larry's arrival, but Beth hesitates to call Larry to tell him where they are. When Donohue grows impatient and broadcasts the information over the radio, Beth finally calls Larry to warn him not to come. When Jim learns that the bullet that killed Danny came from the same gun that wounded him, he calls Beth to arrange a meeting and tells her the news in person. Before Jim arrives, however, Larry has convinced Beth that Jim was using her to get to him and this makes her angry enough to agree to his plans. When Jim arrives at her apartment, he tells her about the new evidence. Beth reveals that Larry is outside waiting for him, but Larry overhears her confession and comes in through the window. During the ensuing shootout Larry is killed, and with the case solved, Beth and Jim are free to fall in love.
