London-based Col. Tom Ferris is so absorbed in his duties of making life comfortable for Air Force and civilian dignitaries that he neglects his beautiful Italian wife, Julie. But things change abruptly with the arrival of Col. Tank Martin, Tom's Korean War buddy. Tom has good reason to be jealous of the girl-chasing Tank because years before both of them fell in love with Julie and Tom won out only by convincing Julie that Tank was killed in action. Delighted to be reunited with Julie and eager to repay an old debt, Tank uses his influence to have Tom shipped to Labrador for an Arctic survival course. But when Tom learns that Julie is planning to divorce him and is in Rome with Tank, he abandons his post, steals a jet plane, masquerades as an Arab potentate, and eventually makes his way to Rome. Tank, however, persuades Tom he has no intention of changing his single status, and Julie is only too anxious to kiss and reconcile. Two years later, Julie, who loves everything in pairs, gives birth to twin boys while Tom continues making life easy for military V.I.P.'s, Brig. Gen. Tank Martin included.
