• Holds up remarkably well

  I loved this movie as a teenager, many years ago, and recently viewed it again, wondering if it would still seem as good now as it did then. It did! The premise sometimes strains credulity a little, but the performers give it their all and make it remarkably believable. Jimmy Stewart gives a warm and heartfelt performance, Margaret Sullavan is very good in a role of unexpected complexity and depth, and the chemistry between them is off the charts. The screenplay is far better than you might expect of a 1930s melodrama; and while the last couple of scenes may be a little blatant in their tearjerking, you get sucked right in nonetheless. Definitely worth a viewing.

  Sappy, aggravating, unrealistic nonsense. Stewart and Sullavan play a pair of hypocrites, each too proud to even want to live together though they claim they love each other. It is obvious they don't even have the remotest concept of the meaning of love. Ray Milland is the best thing about the film and it's a shame he even bothered with slushy twaddle like this. A total crapfest. * out of *****
