In the absence of his commanding officer, Lieut. Charles Brown takes charge of a remote U. S. Naval base in the South Pacific. His first project is to refuel an incoming plane en route from Antarctica with a passenger load of VIPs and samples of ice-age vegetation. When the craft crash-lands, Brown and a rescue team, including Navy nurse Nora Hall and biologist Arthur Beecham, find only the pilot aboard, frozen to his controls in a state of extreme shock. In an attempt to preserve the vegetation, Beecham plants some 6-foot trees in warm soil near the island's hot springs. Shortly thereafter, several Navy personnel disappear. In time it is discovered that they have been devoured by the omnivorous trees which can propel themselves on their snakelike, furry roots. As the menacing threat of the trees intensifies, Brown hurls "Molotov Cocktails" at them, and they perish in the flames.
