Long May It Run
One of my first memories of loving books is that of reading , no inhaling, every precious word of Enid Bagnolds Classic "National Velvet". Years later as an adult , and a horsewoman, I saw this movie . And it does not disappoint. Other reviewers have most ably and accurately described its charm, wonderful English nuances , fine acting and overall magic. I will also add that it is a rare early movie which features horses and doesn't gloss over the riding. And some fine riding it is . Elizabeth Taylor did much of her own riding in the movie, riding a thoroughbred named "King Charles" ( who played the Pie) and a grandson of Man O' War . Elizabeth had fallen in love with the feisty ex racehorse at a California country club where her mother sent her for riding lessons, as Liz was determined to win the role of heroine Velvet Brown. MGM did not want Liz for the role, but she was determined and fought to win it. And win it she did. And with the role, safe to say she won our hearts as well. MGM gifted King Charles to Liz after the movie and she owned him for the rest of his life . I can watch this movie , over and over. It's a classic treasure and a gem of a family movie . And watch out if you have horse crazy children in the family ... for it may well fuel their desire to ride and jump, as it did mine ! I hope TCM will run this movie , always .
Among the most memorable movies ever
First watched this move about 70 years ago. Watched again recently and the magic is still there. Liz Taylor is captivating and Rooney matches her. For all her movies, this remains my favorite. Big pluses for Revere and Crisp as well.
A good family film. Taylor sparkles as a girl determined to enter her horse in the Grand National steeplechase, fine supporting work overall, especially from Revere who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar as her mother. The story is inspirational, if at times melodramatic for a family film. Entertaining and uplifting. I give it a 4/5.
one of the best of all time

Mr. Rooney is 23yrs old here, & shows remarkable depth & maturity, & a sadness or weariness, in "Mi." He conveys understated to excited emotion, from guilt to self-forgiveness, through his outstanding vocal & verbal abilities, & physicality. The cast portrays so well the concepts of wishing, confidence, & overcoming fear, vs. being practical & avoiding great risk & failure; & young Elizabeth Taylor perfectly captures "Velvet's" adventure in wanting & planning, & endurance of spirit, mirrored by "the Pi." Even "Donald" loves dreaming, as if he'll try to become an author. (I can relate:)
A True Classic
There is just something special about this film - it's a true classic in every sense of the word. Beautifully filmed and superlative acting by one and all. Mr. Mickey Rooney is terrific, Ms. Elizabeth Taylor is simply enchanting, with a well deserved Academy Award for Ms. Anne Revere on her supporting performance. It's just so wonderful to watch from start to finish and at times you just don't want it to end. A great film to see at any time of the year and one of my go to 'comfort films'.

Dear Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences : Please award Mickey Rooney an OSCAR at your next ceremony. Give him the oppurtunity to walk on a stage floor one more time. Remembering your past (during the Oscar ceremonies) always brings tears and love for Hollywood. The Hollywood machine made alot money and grew strongther as a result of this man. His efforts with Judy Garland are epic. What are you waiting for ? Please.
