In Panama, in Pop Riley's cafe, Pop's daughter Connie, a dancer and singer, and her unambitious husband, Chick Rollins, lounge lazily in the heat between rehearsals, One evening, John Bradley, president of ABC radio, visits the cafe and is introduced to "Miss" Riley. Although John indicates the possibilities for success in radio are minimal, he asks Connie to look him up in New York City. Connie uses this excuse to urge Chick to return to America. However, upon arriving, Connie finds a bevy of aides blocking access to John. Finally Connie sees John, and he invites her to his apartment to sing a song he heard her perform in Panama. Then, Connie finally tells John that she is married, and wants the radio audition not for herself, but for Chick. Disappointed, John nonetheless agrees to audition Chick. When Connie creates a vaudeville reporter character for Chick to perform, it is a hit, and they are both signed to a contract. Soon, Chick indulges in excessive partygoing and falls for the wiles of society vamp Muriel Bennett, who laughs at him behind his back. Muriel encourages Chick's drinking and makes him miss his show by demanding they have dinner. At last Connie finds Chick with Muriel and surrenders him to her. Chick tells John that he is divorcing Connie, and wants a separate contract. Connie is now more valuable than Chick, howeve, and when he shows up completely drunk and announces the wedding of Connie and John, his show is cut off. Then, Chick heads West accompanied by Muriel, while Connie returns to Panama. John finds Connie at Pop Riley's, and they embrace.
