Twelve episodes trace the story of Nana, a Parisian streetwalker. Separated from her husband, Nana takes a position as a salesclerk in a record shop. She attends a showing of Carl Dreyer's La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc , and it makes her weep. She drifts from one affair to another until she meets an old friend, a prostitute, and, beset by financial difficulties, she also becomes a prostitute working for Raoul, a pimp. Later, she meets and begins an affair with a young student. Her love for the boy grows, and after a philosophic conversation with an acquaintance, Nana decides to break with Raoul. The procurer, however, wants to "sell" Nana to another procurer because the girl has refused a cash customer. Before she has a chance to end her association with Raoul, he gets into a quarrel with the procurer to whom he wished to sell Nana, and as gun shots are exchanged between the two, Nana is killed in the crossfire.
