  • Rita Hayworth was a Star!!!

    • Adventure
    • 2/9/13

Rita Hayworth was the star of this film along with Victore Mature. Both of their careers deserve recogniaiton. Rita Hayworth is wonderful in this movie, and is gorgeous and sexy and talented. Oh what A gal. Backtory: This was a 20th film but soon Rita would be the undisputed Queen of Columbia with films like Cover Girl and the superb Gilda.Years later Harry Cohn wanted to replace Rita with another fabled star Kim Novak. Kim at her discussions at the Egyptian Thatare in Hollywood that the press wanted to create a feud between the Rita and Kim during the filming of Pal Joey. Both Kim and Rita are and will always be Stars, and i use that term advisedly because they were STARS. Kim said that Rita was sweet and kind and much unlike her on screen persona. I liked Mature in Demetrious and the Gladiators with my favorite tough lady Susan Hayward. This film has great production values, set and art decoration.

This is a wonderful musical and one of the movies I saw as a young boy that pointed me toward appreciating the Great American Songbook. That is, the type of songs sung by such as Eddie Fisher, Perry Como, Al Jolson and many others. It is the story of the great songwriter Paul Dresser who was famous around the turn of the century (1900). The movie stars Victor Mature as Dresser and Rita Hayworth as Sal, except that she is not the "Sal" the song was written for. But that's Hollywood. Also some bright boys at 20th Century-Fox decided that there needed to be a few more good songs, so Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger were brought in, and do indeed contributea couple of fine tunes. The stars are good, the music is lively and Phil Silvers is along for comic relief. Victor gives a strong performance, Rita is lovely and lip syncs well and the score is great. Though not mentioned, Dresser was the older brother of novelist Theodore Dreiser (the real family name) and there is an interesting back story as well. Mature and Hayworth got along so well during the filming that they planned to be married. However Victor joined the armed forces (WWII) and by the time he returned home, Rita was Mrs. Orson Welles. One note. The song I'se Your Honey If You Wants Me Liza Jane was retitled out of respect for black moviegoers. The actual title included a word rhyming with Bigger in place of Honey. Also the singing of the title song constituted the first words heard in the first talkie, The Jazz Singer and was sung by Jackie Gleason in every portrayal he did of his character Joe the Bartender. Oh and the Sal for whom Dresser wrote this song was in reality a prostitute back in his hometown in Indiana, by the name of Sallie Walker. Listening to the lyrics with that in mind is interesting. However he was married to the stage star May Howard for a short time. Dresser's other greatly famous song, On the Banks of the Wabash, is the Indiana state song.
