Great Chiller-Diller!

This is my favorite of the Mummy movies. Although considered a low-budget B movie, Universal Studios still knew how to make a very effective polished film and this benefits from two main players: John Carradine, in fine form as the High Priest, and the rapturously beautiful Ramsay Ames as the doomed Princess Ananka/Amina Monsouri heroine. Ames was the most stunning starlet in Hollywood at the time. We see her dressed in Vera West's most beautiful white silk gowns as she walks in a trance to the mummy. That last scene of her rapidly aging into a 3,000 year old Mummy is shocking. The wonderful use of Frank Skinner/H.J. Salter's musical soundtrack--a mixture of "Son of Frankenstein" and "The Wolf Man" is beautifully effective. Robert Lowery Jr. portrays "Tom," the so-called hero but comes across as unusually snappish and unpleasant. I love the way the towns people accept the presence of a mummy so naturally. There's one newspaper headline, "Mummy Returns to Mapleton," and the next shot shows the villagers at the court house, awaiting their orders on how to capture it.

It's A Universal Picture!

The fourth in Universal's 'The Mummy' series, the third with the Mummy Kharis, and the second with Lon Chaney Jr. playing the title role. John Carradine is here and a very attractive female lead (Ramsey Ames) but this film was made quickly and cheaply and is nothing more than Saturday Matinee material; that's not to say you can't enjoy it on a Saturday night with some popcorn!
