Bored ditch diggers Stanley Wright and Aloysius C. Whittaker respond to a classified advertisement and land jobs as "scientific excavators" for an archaeological dig in Egypt, which is lead by Phillip Browning and his pretty daughter Mary. Unknown to them, Browning has planned the expedition in order to return artifacts taken from the tomb of an ancient Egyptian ruler whose much reported "curse" has claimed ten victims, including Browning's friend, Professor Edwards. While a mysterious man in a turban follows them to Egypt and spies on them at their Cairo hotel, Stanley and Whittaker acquaint themselves with some of the region's customs and are nearly killed by a jealous sultan with six wives. Before leaving Cairo, Dr. Edward Sterling, an expedition member, disappears from his hotel room. Terrified, Browning asks Stanley and Whittaker to finish the expedition in the event of his demise and hands them a map and a list of instructions. After they pledge themselves to the mission, Stanley, who is in love with Mary, receives a telephone call strongly advising them to turn back, but forgets the warning as soon as he hangs up. To prevent the forgetful Stanley from losing the map, Whittaker forces him to have a copy of it tattooed on his back. When the group finally reaches the excavation site, Browning disappears. Whittaker, Stanley, Mary and Catfish, Stanley's "man Friday," read Browning's instructions and replace all of the artifacts but, as they are about to leave, are trapped in the tomb by a landslide. Meanwhile, in the tomb's secret room, Dr. Sterling reveals to a tied-up Browning that he murdered all of his cohorts in order to claim a hidden treasure of jewels for himself. After Stanley finds Sterling's journal, in which he reveals his crimes, the group stumbles onto the killer as he is about to plunge a poison-filled needle into Browning. A desperate chase ensues, but Sterling finally is overcome by Stanley and Whittaker and is arrested by Haroun Pasha, the mysterious Egyptian, who turns out to a member of the local secret police.
