I had never heard of Jean Gabin before finding this film--what an incomparable actor! Screenplay by John O'Hara, the novelist and short story writer. Upon seeing that credit, I knew this would be worth a look. The director got the maximum mileage out of a very few sets, and got great performances out of very odd cast of actors. Among the second-billed, Thomas Mitchell plays against type as the bad guy; and Claude Rains is Claude Rains! The campaign hat he wears is a puzzling piece of business, but gives you something to think about. In fact, the whole movie gives you something to think about--what friendship is built upon, the free life of the gypsy versus the peasant life, the stories behind how people come together. In addition, the film creates a definite mood, which to my sensibility is unforgettable. The film did not fare well with audiences in 1942. Well, tastes change. Take a look, it will be worth it. Finally, google up the Wikipedia page for Jean Gabin. Not only was this guy a great actor, but he was a World War ll hero. He should be better known among film buffs and cinephiles.

An interesting collection of actors helps keep this wonderful atmospheric picture afloat. However, one doesn't really see a lot of sexual chemistry between Gabin and Lupino. As good as the French actor is, it probably would've been better if Lupino had been paired with John Garfield. I think it would've been more commercial and much more a must-see classic today.
