FULL SYNOPSIS

powered by AFI

In the New Mexico Territory around 1870, gunman Clay McCord, who has a $10,000 dead-or-alive reward on his head, fears that he is doomed to die from periodic attacks of paralysis reminiscent of the epileptic fits that killed his father. Taking refuge in Escondido, a town filled with fugitive bandits converging there during the state of amnesty declared by Gov. Lem Carter, Clay is given shelter in the cabin of Laurinda, a half-starved young woman. Kraut, the town's outlaw boss, has his henchmen capture Clay and string him up by the hands. That night, however, Clay is rescued by a peddler, Cheap Charley Gamble, who informs him that Governor Carter wants to give him amnesty before the deadline is passed. Clay goes to a cabin outside the city of Tuscona [Tuscon?] for a prearranged meeting with the governor, but when Carter arrives, he finds Clay in the throes of one of his attacks. He summons U. S. Marshal Roy Colby, who is besieging Escondido, and Dr. Chase; and the physician, by extracting a bullet from the outlaw's arm, discovers that the paralytic seizures were brought about by the bullet's touching a nerve. Then, Kraut and his men attack the cabin and set it afire. In the ensuing battle, Dr. Chase and Marshal Colby are killed, but Clay and Carter escape through a cellar tunnel. Once on the outside, Clay kills off Kraut's gang and then rides to Tuscona to accept the governor's amnesty. As he rides out, he is shot by two bounty hunters who are unaware that there is no longer a price on his head. [In the shorter release version, McCord is not shot by the bounty hunters.]
