A well-made version of the famous operetta. Novarro is a Prince whose experiences outside his palace results in him falling for Shearer's barmaid. Lubitsch direction of the story is at his best, he makes it charming if somewhat predictable until the last thirty minutes. A great film to pass the time. I give it a 4/5.

Sorry, TCM article-writer, but you're wrong. (Not entirely sure what movie you were watching!) And Robert Sherwood was right. This was Novarro's finest performance, topping even his Ben-Hur, and is filled with such a vulnerable, honest sweetness! he quite breaks my heart in that final scene -- every time I watch it -- as he handles his new role with such regal grace, overlaid with such poignant regret. One of my favorite silents of all time. If you can't bear to stay up (or get up early), dvr where you can. An overlooked gem. Lubitsch proves here that he can do sentimental without being cloying -- or sly.

Ah youth - Ramon N was only 21 years old and Norma S was only 17 - this was released a month before she married Irving Thalberg, who first saw her four years before when she was only 13...and they were together until his untimely death. Carl Davis composed the music, which is also beautiful.

The youth and sweetness projected by Ramon N and Norma S just shone from the screen. There were so many small gestures by Norma to express emotion, there was not a false note in her performance. Now I know why my mother loved Ramon Navaro so much, he was absolutely beautiful and believable and a great kisser. They looked like the two happiest people on earth and then the saddest! There was so much tenderness in this movie, there are tears on my keyboard.

  • Very touching movie

I loved this movie. It really touched me -- especially the ending. Ramon Novarro, Norma Shearer and Jean Hersholt were terrific. I forgot I was watching a silent movie.

I read this was Norma Shearer's best work, so I researched this film to learn what made Miss Shearer a great actress. After viewing this film, I agree with Joan Crawford's assessment.

  • I absolutely loved this movie!

I have seen the later musical version from 1954 of course, but I had never seen this silent version until it was on television last week. I felt this movie had more soul that the later version and Novarro's portrayal of the prince was so lovely. I highly recommend this movie.
