On The Mark
- Karen Amrhein
- 6/14/11
I found myself pleasantly surprised by "Mark of the Renegade" -- really, a fine swashbuckler. Ricardo Montalban makes a dashing lead and Cyd Charisse a lovely and energetic heroine. The swordplay is excellent, the action frequent, the romance smoldering and engaging, and the plot quite sophisticated and involving. Also, Mr. Montalban finds himself frequently without his shirt, which was not an unpleasant experience for this viewer. Most importantly, "Mark" does not forget that ingredient I hunger for so much in a swashbuckler -- and a characteristic of many, if not most, of the best of the genr -- humor! This film has a fine sense of it. For example, as Marcos Zappa (Ricardo Montalban) enters an inn, the innkeeper promises, "I live to serve you!", to which Zappa replies, "Then live!"I enthusiastically recommend "Mark of the Renegade" to all fanciers of swashbucklers and to those who enjoy romantic adventures from the golden age of Hollywood.
