This film's working title was Don Renegade. Ricardo Montalban was borrowed from M-G-M for the production. Story writer Johnston McCulley also created the character of "Zorro." The consul-general of Mexico attended the premiere of The Mark of the Renegade, which benefitted Mexican charities in Los Angeles.
