What a character!
This is a movie that I could not help but love. The writing and acting were superb. Louis Calhern was magnificent and I laughed out loud several times, something I did not expect to do when watching this film. It pulled me in and I will remember it always. I actually wrote down some of the quotes, they were so good.
Calhern, the classy, classic character actor
- Jeff Boston
Louis Calhern, who excelled almost exclusively in character roles, plays an American icon in "The Magificent Yankee." I have enjoyed Calhern in several movies (Notorious, Duck Soup, The Blackboard Jungle, Execuctive Suite), especially as the desperate old man in "The Asphalt Jungle." Watch this love story and biography of Oliver Wendell Holmes for Calhern and the timeless message about marriage. The "biography" is highly Hollywoodized.
The Magnificent Holmes
While it may drift into a sentimentality that the real Holmes would have hated, it has been too long since the Magnificent Yankee has been seen. This play was a sensation and the movie yielded a best actor nomination. This delightful movie is perfect both for casual watchers and legal wonks. Holmes was a Harvard Graduate, Civil War Hero, and TR appointee - only to alienate his benefactor by being called as spineless as a banana! He changes the law for us today! My only hope is that TCM will release it on DVD as well. Good job reviving this classic!!!
Magnificent yankee- truly magnificent
After googling for a long time this evening, I finally found the name of the movie I have been trying to locate to purchase. The Magnificent Yankee.I don't know how long ago it was that I was fortunate enough to happen on this movie in the wee hours of a sleepless night - however it was so poignant and lovely that it is a classic movie which never left my mind.It is the magificent story within the story which was laid on my heart and mind.Probably the most beautiful love story I have ever seen on film. That of a marriagebuilt on a foundation of love and devotion. It is a story of integrity and what the character of marriage should and could so easily be. Therefore I found this movie to be timeless.I intend to purchase it not only for my husband and myself but to make Christmas presents of it. See this movie if you can. You will be glad you did.
