  Incredibly ridiculous sappy slush full of truly idiotic characters. Stewart should have won an award for portraying the most spineless man in cinematic history. If you can tolerate films like "Penny Serenade" then this depressing, manipulative mush should be right up your alley. If you like realistic, honest drama, however, then look elsewhere. *

  David Selznick produced this picture the same year he did GONE WITH THE WIND and INTERMEZZO. It's a well-polished effort, with terrific performances from the entire cast.

  This picture was released in 1939 - the early days of James Stewart's career. In one pc he's terrific and appealing. Then he's in a picture where he hooks up w/an A list leading lady and he has to explain himself to his old mother or mother and father. He's not so appealing - he's very cloying. Here his leading lady is Carole Lombard and she's the one who is terrific and appealing.
