A must to experience

Wells could do anything. His MacBeth is still hip. It is visually compelling, well-acted, appropriately gory and spooky, and fun.

A classic - in more ways than one

I remember watching this as a college freshman 20-odd years ago. We had been warned by the professor that the operative words were 'low-budget'. And it shows - the costumes, the sets, and especially the sound. Due to budget constraints, the audio was recorded separately from the video, and there are some places it really shows. I also seem to remember he said the entire movie was shot in a week - but that could be wrong. On the other hand, the acting is superb and the story is told well, which says a lot given all of the other hurdles. This helps the overall film overcome these significant hurdles. I think it's well worth watching.

This is the film where you really see where Welles would spend the remaining 30 years of his career. By this time he is no longer "bankable" so the studios had largely abandoned him. So Welles is in a wilderness where he struggled for financing and to complete projects. Invariably the projects always seemed to be a bit flawed but always watchable and visually fascinating. Perhaps not the best Macbeth but enjoyable and visually arresting. Still you wonder what he would have produced with a bit more money and bit less confusion.
